Shopping for a sideboard for our dining room was tougher than I had imagined!  I liked Ballard’s Louis XVI sideboard, but the dimensions weren’t going to work. Oh, and did I mention it was $1299!?  That’s when I decided to search for a sideboard DIY project, and found one on-line at This Old House!

We had to make some modifications to customize it for our space.  Two 30″Hx 36″Wx 12″D stock unfinished wall-mounted cabinets worked perfectly.  Drawers were not a priority in our case.  Shelves for storing dishes and serving pieces were going to be more useful.  A wooden shoe rack made the perfect additional shelf for teacups, creamers, and gravy boats.

Adding bead board on the two sides gave the piece more character.  I painted it with paint I had from another furniture project and glazed it with faux-finishing glaze with a little brown paint added for aging.

When all was said and done we had the perfect sideboard for our needs at a fraction of the cost!
