Had some time today to get involved in a project and decided it would be sewing! Making pillows is pretty much instant gratification, and I needed some of that! So, I got started on pillow for a baby nursery. Two of the pillows are a beautiful paisley print with covered cording and zippers in back for easy removal. Love the results!
The third pillow was lots of fun! The fabric is a soft, natural cotton, quilted, but not thick or heavy. Using blue grosgrain ribbon I created a frame of sorts in the center of the top piece. I measured 4” in from the raw edges of the top piece, pinned the ribbon in place, and top-stitched on both edges of ribbon.
I thought how pretty it would be to have a monogram in the center, but I don’t have the capability to do that. So, I came up with the idea to make a pennant garland inside the frame of ribbon. Using the paisley print for color inspiration, I found just what I needed to make the pennants . Next, I traced the pennant shape onto Heat-N-Bond, cut it out and ironed it to the back of the pennant fabrics. The Heat-N-Bond comes with directions and is not hard to use. My daughter-in-law uses it all the time and gave me step- by -step instructions. (Thanks, my dear!) I will admit I ironed it to the right side of one pennant and had to cut out a new one, so keep that in mind. I was forewarned about that, too!
After placing the pennants in a gentle curve across the inside of the frame, I lightly pressed them down to activate the adhesive left by the Heat-N-Bond. Then I got busy zigzagging all the edges of the pennants. Using embroidery floss, I embroidered a string using a running backstitch so it looks like the pennants are attached to twine or the like. To finish up the pillow I simply put a zipper in the back piece, placed right sides together, and stitched all four sides. All done! Isn’t it super sweet!?
